This concept comes from the idea of making Paras have a branched evolution. I always disliked the idea that the mushroom on Paras basically sucks the Pokemon dry to evolve into Parasect and to exert full control over the poor insect ( it even has zombie-like eyes ).

In this concept evolution a Paras that is able to overcome the mushroom through hard training does exactly the opposite, the insect sucks the nutrients and chemicals in the mushroom and this makes the insect evolve into Parasector... a giant bug/poison insect.

PD: the "sector" part of the name comes from the Latin "insector" that means "to follow closely or pursue".

Parasect is actually based on a real world fungus/insect relationship. The cordyceps fungus [link]

I think it would be neater to see a Paras evolution that involves a fungus in even greater control, perhaps even some kind of bloom...

well... this one is based on a Coconut crab [link] ...which is a really cool looking bug...that is the basis of Paras ( without the mushroom ).

The mushroom in bloom would actually work on a evolution of Parasect...the poor bug would be gone by then.

Actually, Paras has the same basis as the later Nincada; a cicada at the nymph stage:

[link]

Cicada nymphs are, in fact, afflicted by a parasitic fungus which grows a mushroom from the insect's back and prevents it from ever becoming a winged, adult cicada. The same fungus genus (cordyceps) attacks many other insects and actually does control their behavior in some cases.

Paras also shares the feeding habits of real cicadas, sucking nutrients from trees :)

Parasector is awesome though, and would still fit in just fine as an evolution. I like that it gets back the eyes and teeth Paras has!

check the article on Bulbapedia [link] about the coconut crab... is one the animals that they used for the basic shape for Paras. They probably used a mixture of the Cicada you mentioned and the coconut crab to design the little bugger.

Thanks for the comment. I like those explanations, they help on making another design or ideas in general.

Bulbapedia's information on pokemon origins is just guesswork by fan-kids and often notoriously wrong or even impossible (like its claim that gulpin and Swalot are "blobfish")

All of Paras' anatomy is distinctly that of a cicada nymph, which is a very popular and beloved insect in Japan (used as the basis for many other anime and game monsters!) Here's a better comparison:

Cicada nymphs are also famous for climbing trees and burrowing to suck nutrients from their roots :D

And oh yeah, here's some different insects with Cordyceps mushrooms germinating from them, if you're curious:

Unlike paras these are all killed before the fungus begins to grow, but in many species, it reprograms the host's behavior to climb up high before the mushroom sprouts. It helps the spores carry farther!! :)

Thanks for the cool info...this actually gave me an idea to draw this time an evolution of Parasect.

Parasector is pretty perfect though, it does look like a paras that "escaped" the fungus :D
